The Emile Ruecker Wildlife refuge includes red, blue, and yellow blazed trails. The total distance over the three trails is approximately a mile and a half over easy terrain. The recommended walking sequence is to take the yellow trail from the parking lot to the blue trail. Completing the blue trail loop, continue the yellow trail until it loops back to the red trail junction. Take the red trail back to the parking lot.
Yellow Trail
This trail starts at the parking lot then loops with access to either red or blue trails. The yellow trail starts beside a trail sign where trail maps are sometimes available. Running through a small pine grove, a side trail to the observation blind becomes visible to view wildlife on the pond. Entering abandoned farm fields dotted with berry-producing bushes, you'll pass the blue trail setting off to your left and, futher along, the red trail on your right. Staying on the yellow trail, you'll enter a loop around a peninsula of land bordering the Sakonnet River. Through the thick undergrowth, several openings will allow visits to the shoreline to look for fiddler crabs.
Red Trail
This trail starts at the yellow trail and ends at the parking lot. The red trail takes you through the most deeply wooded area of the refuge. Oaks, hickories, and alders are among the trees you'll see. The trail winds along low ledges of sedimentary pudding stone before passing through dense woodland and emergence at the parking lot.
Blue Trail
This trail starts and ends at the yellow trail. The blue trail takes you through dense thicket, past a small brook, then forks at a saltwater marsh. The trail then loops around a peninsula of land offering views of the marshes and river from a slightly elevated vantage point. The tril then returns to the yellow trail junction.
