SITE NAME: Fort Church Military Reservation.

LOCATION: Sakonnet Point, Little Compton, Rhode Island; site map attached.

SITE HISTORY: The United States acquired the site between 1939 and 1943. The site consisted of 204.19 acres. Acquisition was by condemnation and purchase. Fort Church consisted of three main areas. At the West Reservation, the Army constructed 15 temporary structures, Battery Gray, a plotting room, an underground reservoir, 3 wells, a rifle range and pistol range. Battery Gray contained two large casemates housing 16-inch guns. The area between the casemates contained ammunition magazines, electric power generators, and operating and storage facilities. At the East Reservation, the Army constructed 28 temporary buildings, Battery Reilly, a plotting room, 5 wells with pump house, and 3 reservoirs. Battery Reilly consisted of two large casemates housing 8-inch guns. The area between the casemates contained ammunition magazines, electric power generators, and operating and storage facilities. At the South Reservation, the Army constructed 14 temporary buildings, 4 wells, a reservoir, and a battery designated as Battery 212. Battery 212 contained two 6-inch guns and an anti- motor torpedo battery (AMTB).
